There are several causes including low levels of hyaluronic acid and decreased production of new skin cells. Hyaluronic acid is like glue, holding the cells of the epidermis together, until they are ready to be sloughed off. Levels tend to decrease with age. As a result, we begin to see sagging, along with the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
