A funded PhD studentship in the History of Linguistics is available at the
University of Sheffield in the UK. The studentship will begin in September 2009 and is part of a project called ‘Voice into Text: Case Studies in the History of Transcription’ . The successful applicant will divide his or her time between Sheffield, where he/she will be supervised by Dr Richard Steadman-Jones, and the British Library in London, where he/she will work on a number of linguistic collections with the support of two of the curators, Adrian Edwards and Jonnie Robinson.
The studentship includes a living allowance and the payment of tuition fees up to the rate charged for UK and EU students. Further details are available at
